Glow Technology
What is photoluminescence?
Photoluminescence is the process of absorbing energy from light and gradually releasing it as a visible glow in darkness. Black Lume glow designs do not require batteries, wiring, or electronics. They charge from light, glow, fade naturally, and can be charged again whenever you want.
What is strontium aluminate glow pigment?
Strontium aluminate is a modern photoluminescent pigment known for producing a strong, rechargeable glow. When exposed to sunlight, UV light, or another bright light source, its particles absorb energy. In darkness, that stored energy is gradually released as visible light.
We suspend this pigment within durable composite materials and carefully apply it to the channels, inlays, edges, or other luminous areas of a design. It does not require radioactive material or an electrical power source.
What does “hyper-saturated” glow mean?
When we describe a design as hyper-saturated, we mean that its inlay or composite contains a deliberately high concentration of photoluminescent material. That higher loading places more active glow particles in the illuminated area, helping create a fuller, more visible effect than a lightly pigmented mixture.
Hyper-saturation is our description of the material approach—not a standardized scientific rating or a promise of an exact glow duration. Final performance still depends on the design, glow color, exposed surface area, charging source, charging time, and surrounding darkness.
How do I charge the glow?
Expose the luminous area to direct sunlight, a UV flashlight, or another strong light source. UV light creates a fast, intense initial charge, while sunlight and bright artificial light also work well. Ordinary indoor lighting can charge the material more gradually.
For the strongest visible result, charge the piece shortly before entering a dark environment. There is no battery to replace—simply expose it to light again whenever the glow becomes faint.
Why does the glow start bright and then fade?
That gradual fade is the normal behavior of photoluminescent material. The glow is strongest immediately after charging because the material is releasing stored light energy at its highest rate. It then softens progressively over time.
The piece has not stopped working when the glow becomes faint. Recharge it with a strong light source to restore the effect.
How long will my piece glow?
There is no single glow time that applies to every design or environment. Visible brightness and duration vary with the pigment color, concentration, exposed surface area, light source, charging time, and surrounding darkness.
A strong UV or sunlight charge will usually produce a more intense initial effect than ordinary room lighting. The glow will always be brightest first and become subtler as it releases its stored energy.
Do different glow colors perform differently?
Yes. Different glow colors use different pigment formulations, and the human eye perceives some colors more strongly than others. Two colors charged under identical conditions may not appear equally bright or fade at exactly the same rate.
Glow photography is also sensitive to camera exposure, screen settings, and ambient light. Product images show the design and color of the effect, but real-world brightness will change with charging and viewing conditions.
What does the material look like during the day?
When uncharged or viewed in daylight, luminous material may appear pale, translucent, softly colored, or nearly opaque depending on the pigment and composite used. Every Black Lume piece is designed to have a complete daylight identity as well as an after-dark transformation.
Does every Black Lume product glow?
No. Black Lume also creates non-luminous designs centered on carbon fiber, precious metals, opal, stone, and other distinctive materials. A product is only described as glowing when it contains a photoluminescent component. Check the individual product description for the exact materials and features included in that design.
Materials & Craftsmanship
What is the difference between woven and forged carbon fiber?
Woven carbon fiber uses organized strands arranged into a recognizable weave. It creates a cleaner, more technical pattern with directional movement under the light.
Forged carbon uses shorter carbon fibers distributed throughout a composite, producing a more organic, marbled appearance. The fibers settle into a naturally irregular pattern, so no two forged-carbon pieces look exactly alike.
Carbon fiber is lightweight and visually dynamic, but it should still be treated like fine jewelry. The exact construction—structural body, sleeve, stripe, channel, or inlay—is identified on each product page.
What should I know about titanium, tungsten, ceramic, silver, and gold?
Titanium is lightweight, modern, and corrosion resistant. It can still develop scratches with wear, and many titanium designs cannot be resized using traditional jewelry methods.
Tungsten has a substantial feel and is highly scratch resistant compared with many traditional metals. It is also rigid and can chip or crack under severe impact. Tungsten rings cannot be traditionally resized.
Ceramic is lightweight, smooth, and highly scratch resistant, but it can be damaged by a hard impact and generally cannot be resized.
Sterling silver is a traditional precious metal that can naturally develop patina or tarnish over time. It can usually be refreshed with appropriate polishing, although complex inlays may limit resizing or refinishing options.
Gold is offered only where identified in the product listing. Its color, karat, hardness, and wear characteristics vary by alloy. Gold is a precious material, but it is not scratch-proof and will develop the marks and character of wear over time.
What should I expect from opal, meteorite, stone, wood, and other unique inlays?
Specialty materials create natural or organic-looking variation. Color distribution, pattern, texture, and reflective movement will differ from one piece to another. Natural or lab-created materials are identified where applicable in the individual product description.
If a design lists meteorite, its etched pattern will be unique and the material may require extra protection from moisture. Specialty inlays can also respond differently to water, chemicals, heat, and impact, so careful wear is always recommended.
Is every piece handmade?
Black Lume jewelry is crafted, assembled, inlaid, finished, and inspected by hand, one piece at a time. Depending on the design, this may include preparing the ring body, placing carbon or specialty materials, mixing and applying luminous composite, curing, shaping, sanding, polishing, and final inspection.
Because the work is performed by hand, slight differences in pigment distribution, inlay lines, carbon pattern, stone placement, color, and finish are expected. Those variations are part of the individual character of the piece, not evidence of mass production. Non-jewelry accessories, such as sizing tools, are not represented as handmade jewelry.
Ordering, Sizing & Care
How long will my order take to make?
Please allow 2–4 weeks for crafting before shipping. Black Lume jewelry is made and finished individually rather than pulled from a mass-produced inventory bin. Carrier transit time begins after your piece has been completed and shipped.
How should I determine my ring size?
Black Lume uses U.S. ring sizing unless a product page states otherwise. For the most reliable measurement, visit a jeweler or use a rigid ring-sizing tool. String, paper strips, phone apps, and printable guides can stretch, shift, or print at the wrong scale and may produce an inaccurate result.
Band width and interior profile also affect fit. A wider band can feel more snug than a narrow ring in the same measured size. If you are between sizes or unsure how a particular width will fit, contact us before placing your order.
Can my ring be resized?
Some traditional precious-metal rings can be resized, but many Black Lume designs combine materials that cannot be stretched, cut, or soldered conventionally. Titanium, tungsten, ceramic, carbon fiber, and complex inlay constructions may require a remake or exchange instead of a traditional resize.

What is your return and resizing policy?
Because each piece is handcrafted to the selected size, materials, and finish, all sales are final.
Your first Black Lume ring order includes one complimentary resize. Depending on the construction, that solution may involve resizing the original ring or providing an appropriate size-corrected remake or exchange when the material cannot be traditionally resized. Please contact us for instructions and approval before returning anything.
How should I care for my Black Lume jewelry?
Remove your jewelry before swimming, showering, dishwashing, exercising with weights, handling chemicals, or performing work that could expose it to hard impact. Avoid bleach, chlorine, acetone, harsh cleaners, and prolonged contact with lotions or solvents.
For routine cleaning, use a soft damp cloth. When appropriate for the listed materials, a small amount of mild soap may be used, followed by a thorough rinse and immediate drying. Do not use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner unless you have confirmed that it is suitable for every material in your specific piece.
Is Black Lume jewelry waterproof?
Do not assume that every design is waterproof. Brief incidental contact with water may be harmless for some pieces, but composite inlays, wood, meteorite, opal, adhesives, and other specialty materials can require greater care. Removing your jewelry before prolonged water exposure is the safest way to protect its finish and construction.
Will my ring scratch or change with wear?
All wearable materials can show signs of use. Polished metals may develop fine scratches, sterling silver can patina, matte finishes can burnish, and specialty inlays can be damaged by abrasion or impact. These changes are part of normal wear and do not affect the rechargeable nature of the glow pigment, although damage to the surface or inlay can affect its appearance.
